Summary

Macrophages in carotid artery plaques exhibit heightened procoagulant activity (PCA), significantly exceeding that of blood monocytes and macrophages from other atherosclerotic lesions. This enhanced PCA in carotid macrophages may drive thrombus formation on ulcerated plaques, contributing to stroke risk.
