Background:

Client-centeredness is a key concept in modern rehabilitation.
Little is known about how client-centered approaches affect the daily lives of caregivers for stroke survivors.

Purpose of the Study:

To explore and describe the integration of a client-centered activities of daily living (CADL) intervention into the everyday lives of significant others of stroke survivors.

Main Methods:

Qualitative longitudinal design utilizing a grounded theory approach.
Interviews were conducted with seven significant others cohabiting with individuals receiving CADL intervention over the first year.

Main Results:

A core theme identified was "Taking responsibility and achieving balance with respect to self-esteem in order to get on with everyday life."
The integration of CADL was a process where significant others were empowered to address their own needs as the stroke survivor pursued their activity goals.

Conclusions:

Enablement is crucial for significant others of stroke survivors.
Facilitating stroke survivors to set and achieve their desired activity goals may enable significant others to maintain active lifestyles and find personal respite.
