Rarely, vacuum disc phenomenon can cause nerve compression. This study details two cases where gas from the disc formed an epidural cyst, leading to lumbosacral radiculopathy.
Area of Science:
- Neurosurgery
- Radiology
- Spinal Imaging
Background:
- Vacuum disc phenomenon involves gas accumulation within the intervertebral disc space.
- While typically asymptomatic, rare instances can lead to spinal canal gas displacement.
- Epidural gas can compress neural structures, causing symptoms like radiculopathy.
Purpose of the Study:
- To describe two cases of symptomatic epidural gas-containing cysts.
- To investigate the origin of these cysts from intervertebral vacuum phenomenon.
- To analyze the mechanism of nerve root compression by these cysts.
Main Methods:
- Case report of two patients with lumbosacral radiculopathy.
- Radiographic evaluation including imaging of the lumbar spine.
- Analysis of gas collection in the epidural space and its relation to the intervertebral disc.
Main Results:
- Both patients presented with symptomatic epidural gas-containing cysts.
- Radiographic studies confirmed intervertebral vacuum phenomenon and lumbar epidural gas accumulation.
- Gas-containing cysts compressed the dural sac and nerve roots, causing radiculopathy.
Conclusions:
- Epidural gas-containing cysts originating from vacuum disc phenomenon can cause nerve root compression.
- Consideration of gas-containing cysts is important in cases of epidural gas and nerve root compression.
- The findings highlight a rare but significant cause of lumbosacral radiculopathy.
