    Area of Science:

    • Oncology
    • Neurology

    Context:

    • A retrospective review of 322 patients with malignant tumors was conducted.
    • Data was collected between October 1973 and August 1987.

    Purpose:

    • To determine the frequency, clinical presentation, and lesion localization of metastatic brain tumors in the elderly.
    • To compare the observed frequency with existing literature.

    Summary:

    • The overall frequency of brain metastases was 5.8%, with a median patient age of 77.5 years.
    • Primary tumor sites included lung (17.5%), breast (27.3%), bile duct system (6.7%), pancreas (5.0%), and gastric (2.0%) cancers.
    • Lung cancer was the most frequent primary source (14 out of 21 cases).
    • Single and multiple brain metastases were observed in 13 and 8 cases, respectively.

    Impact:

    • This study provides valuable data on the incidence and origins of brain metastases in an elderly population.
    • Findings may aid in early detection and management strategies for brain metastases in geriatric oncology.
