Background:

Post-World War II U.S. military government in Korea prioritized infectious disease control.
Malaria posed a significant threat, with severe impact on military personnel during the Pacific war.

Observation:

The U.S. military established specialized malaria control units and initiated anti-malaria activities in Korea.
The 207th Malaria Survey Detachment identified mosquito species and surveyed malaria prevalence in Seoul school children.

Findings:

DDT proved decisive in malaria vector control, enabling mosquito eradication over large areas.
Vivax malaria, dominant in Korea, was damaging despite being less fatal than Pacific strains.

Implications:

DDT application faced limitations in rural areas, particularly rice paddies, due to crop damage.
The development and application of DDT represented a significant turning point in malaria control efforts.
