    Summary

    During the 2014 Ebola virus disease (EVD) epidemic, many Germans showed poor knowledge of transmission routes. Misperceptions about Ebola transmission were common, potentially leading to inappropriate public health behaviors.

    Background:

    • The 2014 Ebola virus disease (EVD) epidemic in West Africa was unprecedented in its scale and impact.
    • No previous EVD outbreaks had significantly affected European countries, raising questions about public awareness and preparedness.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate public risk perceptions and knowledge regarding Ebola virus disease in Germany during the 2014 epidemic peak.
    • To assess attitudes towards EVD prevention measures, vaccination, and willingness to volunteer for aid.

    Main Methods:

    • An online questionnaire survey was administered to assess various aspects of public perception and knowledge related to EVD.
    • Data were collected from 974 participants regarding their worries, knowledge of transmission, media consumption, and behavioral intentions.

    Main Results:

    • Only 4% of participants correctly identified EVD transmission routes.
    • A significant majority (75%) incorrectly believed in airborne transmission or transmission by asymptomatic individuals.
