Spinning exercise, or indoor-cycling, positively impacts mood by increasing positive affect and decreasing negative affect. This benefit was observed in both self-controlled and instructor-led sessions.
Area of Science:
- Exercise Physiology
- Psychology
- Sports Science
Background:
- Physical activity is known to improve mood.
- Spinning (indoor-cycling) is a popular exercise, particularly among women.
- The effects of spinning on affect have not been previously studied.
Purpose of the Study:
- To examine the impact of spinning on positive and negative affect.
- To compare affect changes in self-controlled versus instructor-led spinning sessions.
Main Methods:
- A pre- to post-exercise design was used with 18 women.
- Affect was measured using a validated questionnaire before and after spinning.
- Enjoyment was rated on a Likert scale after each session.
Main Results:
- Both self-controlled and instructor-led spinning improved positive affect and reduced negative affect.
- Heart rate, indicating exertion, did not differ between conditions.
- Participants reported higher enjoyment in instructor-led sessions (Cohen's d = 0.93).
Conclusions:
- Spinning enhances post-exercise affect, irrespective of music or instructor presence.
- The study demonstrates the mood-boosting benefits of spinning.
- Instructor-led spinning may lead to greater enjoyment.

Exercise Stress Test
Exercise stress testing, commonly known as a treadmill test, is a noninvasive procedure used to evaluate cardiovascular function and diagnose heart conditions.
Definition
An exercise stress test measures the heart's response to exertion using a treadmill or stationary bicycle. Chest electrodes record the heart's electrical activity through an ECG, and blood pressure is monitored regularly.
