Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms, particularly reliving and arousal, are linked to increased odds of paranoia and auditory hallucinations. The more PTSD symptoms experienced, the higher the likelihood of these psychotic experiences.
Area of Science:
- Psychiatry
- Psychology
- Mental Health Research
Background:
- Traumatic events and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are known to correlate with psychosis.
- Specific PTSD symptoms' relationship with psychotic experiences requires further investigation.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the association between specific symptoms of PTSD and the occurrence of paranoia and auditory hallucinations.
- To analyze these relationships in a large-scale population sample.
Main Methods:
- Utilized data from the Adult Psychiatric Morbidity Survey (APMS) with 7403 participants.
- Examined prevalence of lifetime trauma, PTSD symptoms, paranoia, and auditory hallucinations.
- Employed multiple logistic regression analyses to identify predictors.
Main Results:
- Significant associations were found between PTSD symptoms and psychotic experiences.
- Reliving and arousal symptoms predicted paranoia; reliving symptoms predicted auditory hallucinations.
- A dose-response relationship was observed: more PTSD symptoms correlated with higher odds of paranoia and hallucinations.
Conclusions:
- PTSD symptoms are associated with increased odds of experiencing auditory hallucinations and paranoia.
- Evidence suggests overlaps between PTSD symptoms and psychotic experiences.
- Enhanced clinical awareness of this link may improve patient care.
