Area of Science:

  • Addiction Prevention
  • Adolescent Health
  • Behavioral Science

Background:

  • The Moti-4 intervention was designed to prevent addiction and health issues in adolescent cannabis users.
  • Aims include reducing cannabis use and increasing motivation for behavioral change.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop and pilot-test the Moti-4 intervention for adolescent cannabis users.
  • To assess the feasibility and preliminary effectiveness of the intervention.

Main Methods:

  • Intervention Mapping and responsive evaluation were used for intervention development.
  • A pilot study with pre- and post-assessment (N=31) evaluated changes in cannabis use and motivation.

Main Results:

  • Significant reductions in weekly cannabis spending (€17.77 to €11.95) and frequency of use (4.3 to 2.4).
  • Statistically significant increases in planning to change (d=0.44) and desire to quit (d=0.76).
  • Feasibility study informed manual improvements based on user feedback.

Conclusions:

  • Intervention Mapping effectively combined theory and community input for intervention development.
  • The pilot study indicates positive changes in cannabis use and motivation.
  • Further controlled research is needed to establish effectiveness and standard implementation.
