Encouraging adolescents to pursue higher education is linked to better health behaviors. This strategy may improve public health by promoting academic goals, even when considering social factors.
Area of Science:
- Public Health
- Adolescent Health
- Evolutionary Psychology
Background:
- Adolescents anticipating university attendance show more health-promoting behaviors.
- Public health interventions could leverage academic aspirations.
- Evolutionary theory identifies potential confounders in this relationship.
Purpose of the Study:
- Investigate confounders of the relationship between university expectations and adolescent health behaviors.
- Examine the role of life history trajectory indicators.
- Analyze factors at both pupil and school levels.
Main Methods:
- Utilized multi-level logistic regression analysis.
- Analyzed data from the 2010 Scottish Health Behaviour in School-aged Children survey (n=1834).
Main Results:
- University-expecting adolescents engaged in more health-protective behaviors (e.g., fruit/vegetable intake, exercise) and less health-damaging behaviors (e.g., alcohol, tobacco use).
- These associations remained significant after controlling for life history indicators (pubertal timing, socioeconomic status, father absence).
- Adjustments were made for pupil-level factors (gender, age, perceived achievement, communication) and school-level factors (university expectations, affluence, exam performance, climate).
Conclusions:
- Encouraging academic futures for adolescents can yield public health benefits.
- This approach may mitigate negative health impacts associated with accelerated life history trajectories.
- Public health strategies can effectively promote adolescent well-being through academic goal encouragement.
