Insights
Intrapericardial lymphangioma, a rare tumor in children, can cause life-threatening cardiac tamponade. This case highlights the importance of considering this rare diagnosis in pediatric patients with cardiac emergencies.
Area of Science:
- Pediatric Cardiology
- Congenital Malformations
- Thoracic Surgery
Background:
- Lymphangiomas are benign hamartomatous malformations.
- They are typically found in the neck or axilla.
- Intrapericardial location is exceptionally rare.
Observation:
- A pediatric case of intrapericardial lymphangioma is presented.
- The child presented with symptoms of cardiac tamponade.
- Diagnostic imaging confirmed the presence of the mass within the pericardium.
Findings:
- The intrapericardial mass was confirmed as a lymphangioma.
- The tumor caused significant compression of the heart chambers.
- Cardiac tamponade was the primary clinical manifestation.
Implications:
- This case underscores the rarity and potential severity of intrapericardial lymphangiomas.
- Early diagnosis and surgical intervention are crucial for favorable outcomes.
- Further research into the embryogenesis and management of these rare tumors is warranted.
Abstract:
Lymphangiomas are hamartomatous malformations, which are commonly encountered in children. Intrapericardial lymphangioma is exceptionally rare. We present a case of an intrapericardial lymphangioma in a child presenting with cardiac tamponade.
