Summary

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate how positive, negative, and non-emotional contexts affect the recognition of neutral faces.
  • To examine the influence of emotional valence context on subsequent memory effect (SME) and autonomic responses.

Main Methods:

  • Twenty-eight participants completed a betting game task with varying win/loss probabilities to create emotional contexts.
  • Neutral faces were encoded during these contexts, followed by an old/new recognition test.
  • Skin conductance response (SCR) and event-related potentials (ERPs), including N170 and P300, were recorded.

Main Results:

  • Facial recognition was significantly better for faces encoded in positive contexts compared to non-emotional contexts.
  • Autonomic responses (SCR amplitude) did not differ between positive and negative contexts.
  • Subsequent memory effects (SMEs) were observed in N170, P300, and frontal slow wave, specifically modulated by positive contexts.

Conclusions:

  • Positive emotional contexts significantly enhance episodic memory for neutral faces.
  • Positive contexts are more influential on memory encoding and retrieval than negative or non-emotional contexts.
  • Neurophysiological evidence supports the role of positive valence in strengthening memory traces.
