Rous Sarcoma virus or RSV was discovered by F. Peyton Rous in the year 1911 as a filterable transmissible agent that could cause tumors in chickens. He won a Nobel Prize for this discovery in 1966. Background:

  • Kidney sarcomas are rare, comprising only 1% of malignant renal tumors.
  • Myxofibrosarcoma (MFS) is an uncommon soft tissue tumor typically found in the extremities.

Observation:

  • A 70-year-old woman presented with confusion due to hypertensive encephalopathy, revealing a large right renal mass.
  • Histopathology showed a 15-cm pleomorphic, myxoid tumor with specific immunohistochemical markers (vimentin, bcl2, CD34, CD99, AMACR).

Findings:

  • The renal tumor was diagnosed as myxofibrosarcoma (MFS) grade 2.
  • This represents the first documented case of MFS arising from the kidney.

Implications:

  • MFS can exceptionally arise from the kidney, necessitating inclusion in differential diagnoses of renal masses.
  • Radical surgery is the primary treatment, with long-term follow-up essential due to recurrence and metastasis risks.
