Background:

  • Hereditary multiple exostoses (HME) is a rare genetic disorder characterized by the development of multiple bony outgrowths (exostoses).
  • While HME commonly affects long bones and ribs, spinal involvement and subsequent neurological complications are infrequent.

Observation:

  • A 12-year-old boy with a known diagnosis of HME presented with signs of spinal cord compression.
  • A costal exostosis (bony outgrowth from a rib) was identified as the cause of the spinal cord impingement.

Findings:

  • The patient developed paraplegia, an unusual but serious complication of HME.
  • Diagnostic investigations including roentgenograms, myelography, and CT scanning were crucial in pinpointing the exact location and cause of the spinal cord compression.
