Area of Science:

  • Otolaryngology
  • Neurosurgery
  • Rhinology

Background:

  • Endoscopic sinus surgery is standard for frontal sinus diseases.
  • Osteoplastic flap (OF) is reserved for challenging cases.
  • This study reviews OF indications for frontal sinus pathology.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review current indications for osteoplastic flap (OF) in frontal sinus pathology.
  • To analyze patient data undergoing OF procedures.
  • To identify specific criteria for OF use.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective study of 14 patients treated with OF.
  • Reviewed surgical indications, disease types, prior surgeries, findings, complications, and recurrence.
  • Data analysis of patient outcomes.

Main Results:

  • Pathologies included mucoceles (71.4%), inverted papilloma (21.4%), and osteoma (7.1%).
  • Nine patients had prior endoscopic surgery; 10 had orbital dehiscence.
  • 21.4% required surgical revision.

Conclusions:

  • OF indications for inflammatory disease: lateral extension and frontal recess neo-osteogenesis.
  • OF for osteoma depends on tumor size; for inverted papilloma, multifocal implantation.
  • Osteoplastic flap (OF) approach requires individualized patient assessment.
