Prevalence and Incidence01:08

Prevalence and Incidence

In statistical epidemiology and health sciences, two essential metrics—prevalence and incidence—are fundamental for understanding disease dynamics within a population. These measures enable public health officials, epidemiologists, and researchers to assess the burden of diseases, allocate resources effectively, and design impactful public health policies and interventions.
Prevalence indicates the proportion of individuals in a population who have a specific disease or health condition at a...

Summary

Italian women

Area of Science:

  • Public Health
  • Epidemiology
  • Gynecologic Oncology

Background:

  • Cervical cancer screening is crucial for early detection and prevention.
  • Understanding screening patterns is vital for public health interventions.
  • Italy lacks a nationwide organized cervical screening program.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To analyze the utilization patterns of cervical screening among Italian women.
  • To identify demographic and geographic variations in screening uptake.
  • To assess the social class gradient in cervical screening access.

Main Methods:

  • Analysis of data from the 1986-1987 National Health Survey.
  • Inclusion of 27,455 women aged 20-79, representative of the Italian population.
  • Stratified sampling by municipality of residence and age.

Main Results:

  • Approximately 17% of women aged 20-79 underwent annual cervical screening.
  • Screening frequency peaked in women aged 30-49 (approx. 25%) and declined after age 50.
  • Higher screening rates were observed in Northern Italy (22%) compared to the Centre (16%) and South (11%).
  • A significant positive association was found between socioeconomic status (education, occupation) and screening utilization.
  • Screening was less common in younger and older age groups and in Southern regions.

Conclusions:

  • Cervical screening is relatively common in Italy despite the absence of an organized program.
  • Screening utilization is characterized by a marked irrationality, with higher uptake among groups at lower risk.
  • The findings highlight disparities in screening access based on age, region, and socioeconomic status.
  • Targeted interventions are needed to improve equitable and effective cervical screening coverage in Italy.
