  • Included randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing MI with usual care, sham MI, or other psychological therapies.
  • Two authors independently selected studies, extracted data, and assessed risk of bias, focusing on ADL, mood, and mortality.

Main Results:

  • One RCT with 411 participants met the criteria, comparing MI to usual stroke care.
  • No significant differences were found in activities of daily living or mortality at 3 and 12 months.
  • Participants receiving MI showed a higher likelihood of normal mood at both 3 and 12 months follow-up.

  • Insufficient evidence currently supports using motivational interviewing to improve activities of daily living after stroke.
  • Further well-designed randomized controlled trials are necessary to confirm these findings.
  • Motivational interviewing may positively impact mood in stroke survivors, warranting further investigation.
