Summary

Rebound hyperglycemia, a suspected common issue in diabetic cats, is rare. This study found it occurred infrequently even with frequent blood glucose monitoring and tight glycemic control.

  • Retrospective analysis of 10,767 blood glucose curves from 55 diabetic cats treated with glargine insulin.
  • Utilized an intensive blood glucose regulation protocol with frequent monitoring.
  • Defined rebound hyperglycemia in two ways: with and without an insulin resistance component.

  • Biochemical hypoglycemia was frequent.
  • Rebound hyperglycemia with insulin resistance was observed in only 4 single events across 4 cats.

  • Rebound hyperglycemia is rare in cats treated with glargine insulin under tight glycemic control protocols.
  • Insulin glargine dosage should not be reduced for hyperglycemia if there is no clinical or biochemical evidence of hypoglycemia.
  • The Somogyi effect is not a common complication in well-managed diabetic cats.
