Osteoclasts in Bone Remodeling01:31

Osteoclasts in Bone Remodeling

4.8K
Osteoclasts are cells responsible for bone resorption and remodeling. They originate from hematopoietic progenitor cells present in the bone marrow. Numerous progenitor cells fuse to form multinucleated cells, each with 10-20 nuclei. A single osteoclast has a diameter of 150 to 200 µM. These cells have ruffled borders that break down the underlying bone tissue and release minerals such as calcium into the blood in bone resorption. Osteoclasts cling to bones with their ruffled edges during...

Summary

Upper tract urothelial carcinoma can metastasize to bone. This case highlights a Schmorl node mimicking bone metastasis, emphasizing the need for accurate diagnosis in cancer management.

Area of Science:

  • Uro-oncology
  • Skeletal Metastasis
  • Diagnostic Imaging

Background:

  • Upper tract urothelial carcinoma (UTUC) frequently metastasizes to bone post-nephroureterectomy.
  • Accurate diagnosis of bone metastases is crucial for patient management.

Observation:

  • A rare case of UTUC metastasis presented with a Schmorl node in the lumbar vertebra.
  • The Schmorl node mimicked lytic bone metastasis on imaging.

Findings:

  • Schmorl nodes can be mistaken for metastatic lesions in patients with a history of UTUC.
  • Imaging differentiation between Schmorl nodes and bone metastases is critical.

Implications:

  • Misdiagnosis can lead to inappropriate treatment strategies for cancer patients.
  • Radiological assessment must carefully distinguish benign bone changes from malignant metastasis.
