Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the relationship between blood lead levels and intellectual development in elementary school pupils.
  • To compare lead exposure levels in children attending schools in different environments.

Main Methods:

  • Measured blood lead levels (PbB) in 180 elementary school pupils from two schools.
  • Assessed intellectual development using psychological testing.
  • Controlled for confounding factors using stepwise regression analysis.

Main Results:

  • Pupils near a battery plant had significantly higher blood lead levels than those in a residential area.
  • A clear dose-effect relationship was observed: higher blood lead levels correlated with lower IQ scores.
  • This inverse relationship persisted after controlling for confounding variables (partial regression coefficients: -0.85 for verbal IQ, -0.71 for performance IQ, -0.91 for full-scale IQ).

Conclusions:

  • Elevated blood lead levels in children are associated with impaired intellectual development.
  • Environmental lead exposure, particularly near industrial sources, poses a risk to cognitive function in children.
  • Public health interventions are crucial to reduce lead exposure and protect children's neurodevelopment.
