Summary

Predictors of psychological distress after colposcopy were identified. Early anxiety and diagnosis of CIN2+ significantly increased worries about cervical cancer and future fertility in women undergoing colposcopy.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To identify predictors of worries about cervical cancer, sexual health, fertility, and general health.
  • To investigate these worries 12 to 30 months after colposcopy.

Main Methods:

  • 1,515 women aged 20-59 with low-grade cervical cytology underwent colposcopy.
  • Questionnaires were administered at recruitment and at 12, 18, 24, and 30 months.
  • Multiple logistic regression identified factors associated with worries.

Main Results:

  • 40% worried about cervical cancer, 26% about sex, 24% about fertility, 60% about general health.
  • Pre-existing worries and anxiety at recruitment predicted later worries.
  • CIN2+ diagnosis, management received, younger age, and parity influenced specific worries.

  • Clinical, sociodemographic, lifestyle, and psychological factors predict post-colposcopy worries.
  • Early identification of at-risk women can inform targeted support.
  • Long-term psychological impact of colposcopy warrants further investigation.
