Background:

Novel virtual reality (VR) team training systems are being developed.
The feasibility of a VR operating room for surgical crisis simulation was investigated.

Purpose of the Study:

To determine the feasibility of creating a VR operating room.
To evaluate the construct and face validity of a VR surgical crisis simulator.

Main Methods:

Modified the ICE STORM (Integrated Clinical Environment) VR system.
Simulated a surgical crisis scenario focused on laparoscopic visualization loss.
Assessed construct and face validity of the VR environment.

Main Results:

33 participants completed the VR simulation.
Experienced surgeons (attendings) finished faster than trainees (P = .032).
Participants found the simulation realistic, favorable, and low-workload.

Conclusions:

A VR-based operating room is feasible for surgical team training.
The VR simulator offers a realistic team training environment.
