    Background:

    • Ensuring consistent drug bioavailability is crucial for effective treatment and patient safety.
    • Two phenytoin products, Phenytoin Sodium (CAPS) and Epanutin (Parke-Davis), were available.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To compare the bioavailability of two phenytoin products: Phenytoin Sodium (CAPS) and Epanutin (Parke-Davis).
    • To assess the impact of switching between these products on steady-state phenytoin levels.

    Main Methods:

    • Single-dose pharmacokinetic study in eight healthy volunteers.
    • Multiple-dose pharmacokinetic study in four healthy volunteers and two epileptic patients.

    Conclusions:

    • CAPS Phenytoin exhibits slightly higher bioavailability compared to Epanutin based on single-dose administration.
    • Switching between Phenytoin Sodium (CAPS) and Epanutin (Parke-Davis) does not appear to significantly affect steady-state phenytoin levels.
    • These findings suggest potential therapeutic interchangeability between the two phenytoin products under multiple-dose conditions.
