Thyrotoxicosis in northern Nigeria: a rare disease

Four hundred and thirteen patients had surgery for large to giant goitres between January 1971 and December 1985. Twenty-three (5.7%) of this number had thyrotoxicosis; there were 19 females and 4 males. Thirteen patients presented with nodular goitre; 3 of them had exophthalmos and mild infiltrative dermopathy associated with thyroid nodules--the Marine Lenhart syndrome.
