Ankle Joint01:10

Ankle Joint

3.7K
The ankle is formed by the talocrural joint (crural = leg). It consists of the articulations between the talus bone of the foot and the distal ends of the tibia and fibula of the leg. The superior aspect of the talus bone is square-shaped and has three areas of articulation. The top of the talus articulates with the inferior tibia. This is the portion of the ankle joint that carries the body weight between the leg and foot. The sides of the talus are firmly held in position by the articulations...

Summary
This summary is machine-generated.

Ankle malunion treatment is challenging. Reconstructive osteotomy of the fibula successfully restored weight-bearing ability and improved functional scores in a patient with chronic ankle malunion symptoms.

Area of Science:

  • Orthopedic Surgery
  • Podiatry
  • Biomechanics

Background:

  • Chronic symptoms from malunion present significant challenges in orthopedic surgery.
  • Ankle malunion can severely impair patient mobility and quality of life.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To present a case study on the management of chronic ankle malunion.
  • To evaluate the efficacy of reconstructive osteotomy for treating ankle malunion.

Main Methods:

  • A patient with ankle malunion, approximately 1 year post-initial surgery, was treated.
  • The intervention involved reconstructive osteotomy of the fibula.
  • Functional outcomes were assessed post-intervention.

Main Results:

  • The patient regained the ability to walk with weight-bearing after the reconstructive osteotomy.
  • Significant improvements in functional scores for the foot and ankle were observed.
  • The surgical intervention effectively addressed chronic symptoms.

Conclusions:

  • Reconstructive osteotomy is a viable and effective treatment option for ankle malunion.
  • This surgical approach can restore function and improve patient outcomes in cases of ankle malunion.
