Background:

  • Diabetes mellitus is a global health concern with significant ophthalmologic implications.
  • Elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) is a risk factor for optic nerve damage and vision loss.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the relationship between diabetes and intraocular pressure (IOP) in patients at Avicenna Hospital.
  • To compare IOP levels in diabetic patients with those of non-diabetic individuals.

Main Methods:

  • A cross-sectional study involving 400 participants (200 diabetic, 200 non-diabetic) was conducted over one year.
  • Data collection included examinations and checklists, analyzed using SPSS 16 statistical software.
  • Statistical analyses included Chi2 test, t-test, Fisher's exact test, and Pearson's correlation coefficient (P < 0.05).

Main Results:

  • Diabetic patients had a significantly higher mean intraocular pressure (16.71 ± 1.96 mm/Hg) compared to non-diabetic individuals (12.86 ± 1.45 mm/Hg) (t = 22.337, P = 0.001).
  • The mean age of diabetic patients was 54.17 ± 8.25 years, and non-diabetic patients was 49.06 ± 7.26 years.
  • Mean vision acuity of the right eye was 9.035 in diabetics and 9.56 in the control group.

Conclusions:

  • Diabetes is significantly associated with elevated intraocular pressure.
  • Regular monitoring and recording of intraocular pressure are recommended for all diabetic patients.
