Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) do not show a prominent visual learning style. Their performance with visual aids did not improve, unlike children with global developmental delay (GDD) and typically developing (TD) children.
Area of Science:
- Neurodevelopmental disorders
- Developmental psychology
- Cognitive science
Background:
- Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are often presumed to be "visual learners."
- This assumption suggests a learning preference for visual information over auditory information.
- However, empirical evidence supporting this distinct learning style in ASD is limited.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the visual learning assumption in children with ASD.
- To compare visual attention and learning performance across ASD, global developmental delay (GDD), and typically developing (TD) children.
- To explore the relationship between visual attention, receptive language, and learning outcomes.
Main Methods:
- An eye-tracking experiment was conducted with 25 children with ASD, 19 with GDD, and 17 TD children.
- Participants viewed instructional videos in speech-only and speech + pictures conditions.
- Performance was measured by task completion accuracy.
Main Results:
- No significant group differences in visual attention to video stimuli were observed.
- Children with GDD and TD groups showed improved performance with the addition of pictures.
- The ASD group did not demonstrate enhanced performance when pictures were present.
- Performance in ASD and GDD groups correlated positively with visual attention and receptive language skills.
Conclusions:
- The study found no evidence to support a prominent visual learning style in children with ASD.
- Unlike TD and GDD groups, children with ASD did not benefit from visual aids in this learning task.
- Receptive language skills appear to be a significant factor in learning for children with ASD and GDD.
