Postinfusion phlebitis, an inflammation after intravenous catheter removal, occurred in 1.8% of patients. Emergency room catheter placement was the only identified risk factor for this condition.
Area of Science:
- Medical research
- Clinical nursing
- Patient safety
Background:
- Postinfusion phlebitis is a potential complication following peripheral intravascular catheter use.
- Understanding its incidence and risk factors is crucial for patient care improvement.
Purpose of the Study:
- To determine the incidence of postinfusion phlebitis.
- To identify risk factors associated with its development.
Main Methods:
- Analysis of data from a large randomized controlled trial involving 5,907 peripheral intravascular catheters (PIVCs) from 3,283 patients.
- Retrospective review of patient data and catheterization details.
Main Results:
- Postinfusion phlebitis was diagnosed in 59 patients (1.8%) at 48 hours post-removal.
- Catheter placement in the emergency room was significantly associated with an increased risk of phlebitis (P = 0.03).
Conclusions:
- Postinfusion phlebitis is an uncommon but potentially problematic complication.
- Educating healthcare staff and patients about recognizing symptoms after intravascular device removal is important.
