Diphtheria is an acute, toxin-mediated infectious disease that primarily affects the upper respiratory tract. It is caused by Corynebacterium diphtheriae, a Gram-positive, pleomorphic rod that lacks spore-forming capability and exhibits a characteristic club-shaped morphology under microscopic examination. Summary

Spectacle abnormalities in snakes, including inflammation and shedding issues (dysecdysis), are common, often caused by infections and husbandry problems. Early detection of spectaculitis and dysecdysis is crucial for snake health.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To describe the histologic features of abnormal snake spectacles.
  • To identify common causes and contributing factors of spectacle disease and dysecdysis.

  • Retrospective study of 60 snake specimens over 15 years.
  • Histologic examination of spectacle tissues.
  • Identification of infectious agents using special stains.

Main Results:

  • Fifty-two snakes showed spectacle inflammation (spectaculitis), primarily affecting the stroma and outer epithelium.
  • Infectious agents included mites, bacteria (Gram-positive cocci), and fungi.
  • Thirteen snakes had spectacle dysecdysis, with 5 concurrent inflammatory reactions.

Conclusions:

  • Spectacle inflammation and dysecdysis are linked to infections and potential husbandry issues.
  • Suboptimal husbandry and concurrent diseases may contribute to spectacle problems.
  • Spectaculitis and dysecdysis represent a small percentage of submitted snake cases.
