Summary

Drinking a carbohydrate-electrolyte beverage during prolonged exercise in heat did not differ from water for physiological strain. However, the beverage aided recovery by increasing plasma volume and electrolyte levels more effectively than water.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate if ad libitum consumption of a carbohydrate-electrolyte (CE) beverage mitigates physiological disturbances during prolonged exercise in heat.
  • To compare the effects of a CE beverage versus water on physiological responses during exercise and recovery.

Main Methods:

  • Seven male subjects completed 3-hour cycle exercise bouts at 60% VO2max in 31.5°C heat.
  • Subjects consumed either a CE beverage or distilled water ad libitum during exercise and a 3-hour recovery period.
  • Key physiological markers including rectal temperature, heart rate, sweat rate, plasma volume, and electrolyte concentrations were monitored.

  • CE beverage consumption is more effective than water in promoting physiological recovery after exercise in heat, particularly regarding fluid and electrolyte repletion.
