Kidney Structure01:45

Kidney Structure

77.0K
The kidneys are two large bean-shaped organs located in the upper abdomen. They filter the blood several times a day to remove toxins and rebalance water and electrolytes of the circulatory system via the renal veins. The kidneys receive blood directly from the heart via the renal arteries. These arteries enter the kidney at the hilum, the concave surface of the bean, where they branch and divide into smaller vessels and capillaries.

Internal Anatomy of the Kidney

9.4K
The kidneys are essential organs in the human body, performing a myriad of tasks that maintain homeostasis and overall health.
Anatomical Position and Dimensions
The kidneys are retroperitoneal organs positioned against the posterior abdominal wall on either side of the spine, roughly between the twelfth thoracic and third lumbar vertebrae. Each kidney is typically 10-12 cm long, 5-6 cm wide, and 3-4 cm thick, weighing about 150 grams.

Blood and Nerve Supply to the Kidney

5.9K
The kidneys are vital organs responsible for filtering and cleaning blood, removing waste products, and regulating electrolyte levels. To perform these essential functions, they require a constant and robust blood supply.
Bloody Supply to the Kidneys:
The kidneys receive their blood supply from the renal arteries, which branch off from the abdominal aorta—the main artery supplying the abdomen and lower body. The renal arteries enter the kidneys at the hilum, a notch on the medial side of...

Imaging Studies I: Kidney, Ureter, and Bladder Studies

698
Kidney, Ureter, and Bladder (KUB) StudiesKidney, Ureter, and Bladder (KUB) studies are standard diagnostic imaging procedures used to assess the anatomy of the urinary system. They are commonly utilized for patients experiencing abdominal pain or urinary symptoms. By using a simple X-ray of the abdomen, KUB studies can reveal structural and pathological abnormalities within the kidneys, ureters, and bladder. These studies are particularly valuable in diagnosing kidney stones, urinary...

Summary

Reduced kidney function, indicated by lower estimated glomerular filtration rate using cystatin C (eGFRcys) and higher albumin-to-creatinine ratio, is linked to poorer white matter integrity in the brain. This highlights the brain-kidney connection.

Area of Science:

  • Neuroimaging
  • Nephrology
  • Public Health

Background:

  • Kidney function is crucial for overall health.
  • White matter microstructural integrity is vital for brain function.
  • The relationship between kidney function and brain health is an area of active research.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between kidney function markers and white matter microstructural integrity.
  • To explore how estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) and albumin-to-creatinine ratio relate to brain white matter health.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized data from 2,726 participants in the population-based Rotterdam Study.
  • Assessed kidney function using albumin-to-creatinine ratio and eGFR calculated with cystatin C (eGFRcys) and creatinine (eGFRcr).
  • Employed Diffusion-MRI to evaluate white matter microstructural integrity and multiple linear regression for analysis.

Main Results:

  • Lower eGFRcys and higher albumin-to-creatinine ratio were associated with worse white matter integrity (lower fractional anisotropy, higher mean diffusivity).
  • No significant linear association was found between eGFRcr and white matter integrity.
  • Associations were attenuated in subjects with hypertension, suggesting a complex interplay.

Conclusions:

  • Impaired kidney function, particularly when assessed by eGFRcys and albuminuria, is associated with diminished white matter microstructural integrity.
  • Clinicians should consider potential brain changes in patients with reduced kidney function.
