Area of Science:

  • Adolescent Health
  • Psychology
  • Sociology

Background:

  • Weight concerns are prevalent among adolescents, impacting mental and physical health.
  • Understanding the influence of family dynamics on adolescent body image is crucial for targeted interventions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the prevalence of weight concerns (desire to lose or gain weight) in adolescent boys.
  • To examine the associations between these weight concerns and health indicators.
  • To explore the relationships between family factors and adolescent boys' weight concerns.

Main Methods:

  • Analysis of data from the 2010 Health Behaviour in School-aged Children survey.
  • Inclusion of 6187 boys aged 10-17 years from the Republic of Ireland.
  • Statistical analysis using logistic regression to identify risk factors and protective factors.

Main Results:

  • 25.1% of boys desired weight loss; 7.7% desired weight gain.
  • Both weight concerns correlated with poorer self-rated health, life satisfaction, happiness, and increased physical/emotional symptoms.
  • Daily family breakfasts, frequent family evening meals, and ease of communication with mother were associated with reduced weight concerns.
  • Open father-son relationships and father's presence in the home decreased the risk of weight loss concerns.

Conclusions:

  • A significant minority of adolescent boys experience body weight concerns, associated with adverse health outcomes.
  • Promoting frequent family meals and open family communication are vital strategies to mitigate these concerns.
  • Family environment plays a significant role in shaping adolescent boys' body image and associated health indicators.
