Summary

Navigated high tibial osteotomy offers improved accuracy for knee alignment compared to conventional methods. Further high-quality studies are needed to confirm these findings in treating medial compartment osteoarthritis.

Area of Science:

  • Orthopedic Surgery
  • Biomechanical Engineering

Background:

  • High tibial osteotomy (HTO) is crucial for correcting varus malalignment in medial compartment knee osteoarthritis.
  • Precise alignment is vital to prevent complications from over- or undercorrection.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To systematically compare the clinical and radiological outcomes of navigated HTO versus conventional HTO.

Main Methods:

  • Systematic review of MEDLINE and EMBASE databases.
  • Inclusion of studies comparing navigated and conventional HTO techniques.
  • Focus on short-term clinical and radiological outcomes.

Main Results:

  • 14 studies were included from 71 retrieved articles.
  • Most studies indicated superiority of navigated HTO over conventional techniques.
  • Statistical analysis was limited due to study heterogeneity.

Conclusions:

  • Navigated high tibial osteotomy demonstrates enhanced accuracy compared to conventional approaches.
  • Higher quality research is recommended to solidify current evidence.
