Summary

Sensory-based interventions show promise for children's behavioral issues, particularly tactile approaches like massage. However, more research is needed to confirm effectiveness and guide appropriate use.

Background:

Sensory-based intervention is frequently used for behavioral problems in children.
Systematic examination of intervention types and effectiveness is lacking.

Purpose of the Study:

To review the effectiveness of sensory-based interventions for children's behavioral problems.
To identify ideal types of sensory-based interventions.

Main Methods:

A systematic review of 132 studies identified from seven databases.
14 studies met selection criteria for review, categorized by sensory modality (tactile, proprioceptive, vestibular).

Main Results:

Tactile-based interventions, such as massage therapy, showed the most promise in reducing behavioral problems.
Seven studies focused on tactile, four on proprioceptive, and three on vestibular interventions.

Conclusions:

Evidence for the effectiveness of sensory-based interventions remains inconclusive.
Further research is necessary to determine optimal interventions for children with behavioral challenges.
