Synthesis of new DNA molecules is carried out by the enzyme DNA polymerase, which adds nucleotides on the daughter strand complementary to the template DNA strand. DNA polymerase has a higher affinity to add the correct base and ensures fidelity during DNA replication. Furthermore,  it exhibits proofreading activity during replication, using an exonuclease domain that cuts off incorrect nucleotides from the nascent DNA strand.

Journal Bearings

1.4K
Journal bearings are mechanical components that support and provide lateral stability to rotating shafts and axles. They are crucial in reducing friction, wear, and vibration in machinery such as engines, turbines, and pumps. The principle behind journal bearings is forming a thin lubricant film between the bearing surface and the rotating shaft, which minimizes direct contact and reduces frictional forces.
To better understand the concept of journal bearings, consider a rope winch with dry or...

Crossing Over

174.4K
Unlike mitosis, meiosis aims for genetic diversity in its creation of haploid gametes. Dividing germ cells first begin this process in prophase I, where each chromosome—replicated in S phase—is now composed of two sister chromatids (identical copies) joined centrally.
The homologous pairs of sister chromosomes—one from the maternal and one from the paternal genome—then begin to align alongside each other lengthwise, matching corresponding DNA positions in a process...

Crossing Over01:30

Crossing Over

7.3K
Crossing over is the exchange of genetic information between homologous chromosomes during prophase I of meiosis I. Genetic recombination gives rise to allelic diversity in the newly formed daughter cells. In humans, crossing over produces genetically distinct haploid egg and sperm cells that undergo fertilization to produce unique offspring. Before cell division starts, the germ cell’s chromosome(s) undergo duplication in the S phase of the cell cycle. As the cells enter prophase I,...

Area of Science:

  • Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences
  • Addiction Medicine
  • Public Health

Background:

  • Polish Psychiatry journal announces free, direct PubMed access to full-text articles in Polish and English.
  • This initiative aims to increase the global availability and readership of research by Polish psychiatrists.
  • The current issue focuses on addiction, including behavioral (Internet addiction) and alcohol dependence.

Discussion:

  • Explores the complex challenges of dual diagnosis, specifically the coexistence of alcohol dependence with other psychiatric disorders.
  • Highlights the need for comprehensive treatment approaches, including pharmacotherapy, psychoeducation, and addiction programs.
  • Discusses the difficulties in maintaining abstinence for patients with comorbid conditions and exacerbating psychopathological symptoms.

Key Insights:

  • Research emphasizes the critical need for effective pharmacotherapeutic strategies to manage alcohol abuse and its consequences.
  • Investigates novel treatment options, referencing baclofen as a focus in the current issue, alongside established treatments like acamprosate and opioid receptor antagonists.

Outlook:

  • The enhanced accessibility is expected to improve the journal's international scope and bibliometric indicators in the long term.
  • Future research will likely focus on innovative pharmacotherapies and integrated treatment models for dual diagnosis patients.
