Parental cancer poses risks to children's psychosocial well-being.

Purpose of the Study:

To examine the relationship between parental cancer and child distress.
To test a model where parental cancer impacts parenting self-efficacy and behaviors.
To explore how parental illness affects parenting efficacy and concerns about child distress.

Main Methods:

Cross-sectional study of 194 adult oncology outpatients with children aged 18 or younger.
Utilized questionnaires for health-related quality of life, depression, anxiety, distress, and parenting concerns.
Assessed parenting efficacy beliefs and parenting concerns using the Parenting Concerns Questionnaire.

Main Results:

Parenting efficacy significantly declined post-diagnosis, correlating with medical treatment and poorer parent well-being.
High parental concern about illness impact on children correlated with decreased parenting efficacy.
Declines in parenting efficacy were linked to parental concerns about children's emotional distress.

Conclusions:

Parenting concerns are critical factors in patient distress.
Identifying and addressing parenting concerns can alleviate patient distress.
Findings can guide future interventions for families affected by parental cancer.
