Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the effect of sleep restriction (SR) on heat pain perception.
  • To determine if SR impacts conditioned pain modulation (CPM).

Main Methods:

  • Paired cross-over design with habitual sleep (HS) vs. 50% SR.
  • 22 healthy participants (14 women, 8 men).
  • Heat pain stimulus (47°C) and cold pressor test (7°C) used to assess CPM.

Main Results:

  • Heat pain was perceived as more intense after SR compared to HS.
  • CPM-mediated pain inhibition was stronger after SR than HS.

Conclusions:

  • Sleep restriction increases heat pain perception.
  • Contrary to assumptions, SR enhanced rather than reduced inhibitory CPM.
  • Findings challenge the direct link between reduced sleep and impaired pain inhibition.
