  • Twenty-two Morquio patients (ages 3-40) underwent impulse oscillometry system (IOS), pneumotachography, respiratory inductance plethysmography, and spirometry.

  • Non-invasive tests showed high compliance (100% for pneumotachography and plethysmography, 81.8% for IOS).
  • Spirometry compliance was 77.3%.
  • All patients had normal vital signs. Non-invasive tests yielded normal values, though predicted forced expiratory volume decreased with age. Key spirometry metrics remained normal and unaffected by age.

Conclusions:

  • Non-invasive pulmonary function tests are viable for assessing lung function in Morquio syndrome patients, including young or wheelchair-bound individuals.
  • These tests provide a new diagnostic approach for evaluating respiratory health in Morquio syndrome.
  • The study found no clinical signs of restrictive or obstructive lung disease in the evaluated Morquio patients.
