Photon-counting breast CT systems show promise for detecting breast microcalcifications (μCa) with high accuracy. These systems may offer superior image quality at lower radiation doses compared to standard mammography.
Area of Science:
- Medical Imaging
- Radiology
- Photon-counting technology
Background:
- Breast microcalcifications (μCa) are key indicators of breast cancer.
- Accurate detection of μCa is crucial for early diagnosis.
- Current imaging techniques have limitations in sensitivity and dose.
Purpose of the Study:
- To assess the feasibility of a dedicated breast computed tomography (CT) system using photon-counting silicon (Si) strip detectors for μCa detection.
- To determine the smallest detectable μCa size with this novel system.
Main Methods:
- Simulations of a photon-counting breast CT system and a prototype were performed using MATLAB.
- Phantoms simulating average breast tissue with varying μCa sizes (100-215 μm) were used.
- Reader studies evaluated μCa detectability using the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC).
Main Results:
- Simulations demonstrated high detection accuracy (AUC > 0.89) for μCa > 120 μm at 3 mGy mean glandular dose (MGD).
- Experimental results showed high accuracy (AUC > 0.98) for μCa > 140 μm at 1.2 mGy entrance exposure.
- The system proved effective in detecting microcalcifications across different sizes and doses.
Conclusions:
- The photon-counting breast CT system with Si strip detectors shows potential for superior μCa detection.
- This technology may offer improved image quality at reduced radiation doses compared to mammography.
- Further development could enhance early breast cancer diagnosis.
