Implicit inference, dependent on the hippocampus, can occur automatically during memory encoding. This study used intracranial EEG to show the hippocampus integrates past experiences to unconsciously influence future decisions.
Area of Science:
- Neuroscience
- Cognitive Science
Background:
- Inference, crucial for adaptive behavior, typically relies on conscious hippocampal processes.
- Emerging evidence suggests hippocampus-dependent inference may occur implicitly during memory encoding.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the feasibility and temporal dynamics of implicit hippocampal inference.
- To explore whether the hippocampus can automatically integrate information outside of awareness.
Main Methods:
- Used intracranial electroencephalography (iEEG) in presurgical epilepsy patients with hippocampal depth electrodes.
- Participants judged semantic fit of word pairs, some establishing indirect relations.
- Analyzed event-related potentials (ERPs) during encoding and retrieval phases.
Main Results:
- Behavioral data indicated implicit inference, as participants' judgments were influenced by indirect relations they were unaware of.
- Hippocampal ERPs showed automatic establishment of indirect relations during encoding (around 400 ms).
- Later ERPs (1,500 ms) and response-locked effects at test suggested interaction of implicit memory with decision-making.
Conclusions:
- The hippocampus can implicitly infer relations from past experiences during memory encoding.
- This automatic integration of memories influences future decision-making outside of conscious awareness.
- The findings reveal a temporal course for implicit hippocampal inference.
