Appendiceal carcinoid tumors are common and often asymptomatic, frequently discovered during appendectomy. Surgical removal, typically appendectomy, provides an excellent prognosis for these benign neoplasms.
Area of Science:
- Gastroenterology
- Surgical Oncology
- Pathology
Background:
- Carcinoid tumors are the most frequent appendiceal neoplasms.
- Clinical presentation often mimics acute appendicitis or is asymptomatic.
- Incidental diagnosis during histopathological examination post-appendectomy is common.
Purpose of the Study:
- To report a case of appendiceal carcinoid tumor.
- To highlight the diagnostic and treatment approach.
- To emphasize the favorable prognosis.
Main Methods:
- Case report of a 22-year-old female with chronic right lower abdominal pain.
- Successful appendectomy performed.
- Histopathological examination confirmed carcinoid tumor at the appendix tip.
Main Results:
- The patient presented with a three-year history of recurrent right lower abdominal pain.
- Histopathology confirmed an appendiceal carcinoid tumor.
- One-year follow-up showed complete recovery and no discomfort.
Conclusions:
- Appendiceal carcinoid tumors are typically benign with an excellent prognosis.
- Appendectomy is sufficient treatment for most cases.
- Right colectomy may be indicated for larger lesions.
