Summary

Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) may be linked to optic neuropathy (ON). Early cessation of SSRIs might preserve vision and potentially aid recovery in patients experiencing ON.

  • Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are widely prescribed for depression and anxiety.
  • While ophthalmic side effects like glaucoma are known, optic neuropathy (ON) has not been commonly reported with SSRI use.

Observation:

  • Five cases of optic neuropathy (ON) were identified in an island population over two years.
  • These cases exhibited characteristics potentially associated with long-term SSRI treatment.
  • Vascular origin was suspected for the ON, with Naranjo algorithm scores indicating possible to probable adverse drug reactions.

Findings:

  • SSRI cessation may be beneficial in protecting the unaffected eye.
  • Vision recovery is possible in some cases following SSRI discontinuation.
