    Summary

Pulmonary sequestration, a rare lung condition, was identified in seven patients. Diagnosis may be suspected in cases of recurrent pneumonia with atypical symptoms, aided by roentgenologic findings of abnormal blood vessels.

    Area of Science:

    • Pulmonology
    • Vascular Surgery
    • Radiology

    Background:

    • Pulmonary sequestration is a congenital lung malformation.
    • It can present with recurrent respiratory infections.
    • Diagnosis is often delayed due to nonspecific symptoms.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To describe the clinical presentation and diagnostic features of pulmonary sequestration.
    • To highlight the role of imaging in diagnosing this condition.
    • To identify the vascular supply in affected patients.

    Main Methods:

    • Retrospective review of 7 patients diagnosed with pulmonary sequestration.
    • Analysis of clinical symptoms, roentgenologic findings, and surgical/autopsy reports.
    • Vascular anatomy assessment through imaging and surgical exploration.

    Main Results:

    • Seven patients aged 14-46 years were diagnosed with pulmonary sequestration.
    • Recurrent pneumonia without severe intoxication was a key clinical clue.
    • Roentgenologic studies revealed aberrant vessels originating from the thoracic and abdominal aorta.

    Conclusions:

    • Pulmonary sequestration should be considered in patients with recurrent pneumonia.
    • Characteristic roentgenologic findings, particularly aberrant vasculature, are crucial for diagnosis.
    • Early diagnosis and surgical intervention can improve patient outcomes.
