Area of Science:

  • Dentistry
  • Oral Medicine

Background:

  • Microstomia, characterized by a reduced oral aperture, presents significant challenges in dental treatment.
  • Limited mouth opening, whether congenital or acquired, impacts patient quality of life and necessitates specialized dental care.

Observation:

  • Dentists frequently encounter patients with microstomia, where access to the oral cavity is severely restricted.
  • The case involved a patient with developmental microstomia requiring complete dentures, posing unique treatment difficulties.

Findings:

  • This paper details the successful fabrication and fitting of sectional complete dentures for a patient with developmental microstomia.
  • Modifications to conventional denture construction steps were implemented to accommodate the patient's constricted oral opening.
