Area of Science:

  • Gastroenterology
  • Internal Medicine

Background:

  • Iron-deficiency anemia is common and typically managed with oral iron supplements.
  • Iron pill-induced gastritis is an under-recognized complication of iron therapy.

Observation:

  • A 59-year-old male with iron-deficiency anemia presented with symptoms potentially related to ferrous sulfate tablets.
  • Upper endoscopy revealed a single superficial gastric ulceration in the stomach body.

Findings:

  • Biopsies confirmed heavy iron deposition within the gastric ulceration.
  • The ulceration was determined to be a direct consequence of iron tablet ingestion.

Implications:

  • Iron pill-induced gastritis can cause significant corrosive mucosal injury.
