Osteoporosis and sarcopenia·2026

Fetuin-A (FetA) levels are higher in elderly individuals with sarcopenia, an aging condition. Elevated FetA is linked to impaired heart function, specifically diastolic and systolic dysfunction in older adults.

Area of Science:

  • Gerontology
  • Cardiology
  • Biochemistry

Background:

  • Sarcopenia, characterized by age-related loss of muscle mass and function, impacts overall health.
  • Fetuin-A (FetA) is implicated in body composition changes and may influence age-related conditions.
  • Myocardial function, particularly diastolic function, can be affected by aging and sarcopenia.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between Fetuin-A levels and myocardial function in asymptomatic elderly patients.
  • To determine if elevated FetA is linked to sarcopenia and subsequent cardiac dysfunction.
  • To explore the relationship between FetA, sarcopenia, and systolic/diastolic heart function in the elderly.

Main Methods:

  • Cross-sectional study involving 541 asymptomatic elderly individuals (≥ 65 years).

  • Assessment of sarcopenia using established criteria.
  • Measurement of Fetuin-A (FetA) serum levels.
  • Echocardiographic evaluation of left ventricular systolic and diastolic function.
  • Main Results:

    • Sarcopenic patients (17%) exhibited significantly higher FetA levels compared to non-sarcopenic individuals.
    • A subset of sarcopenic patients (4.3%) met criteria for sarcopenic left ventricular dysfunction (S-LVD), showing reduced systolic function, higher end-diastolic pressure, and elevated FetA.
    • Higher FetA levels, older age, and impaired diastolic function were independently associated with S-LVD.

    Conclusions:

    • Fetuin-A is significantly elevated in elderly individuals with sarcopenia.
    • Elevated FetA in sarcopenic elderly patients is associated with impaired diastolic and systolic cardiac function.
    • FetA may play a role in the development of cardiac dysfunction in the context of sarcopenia and aging.
