Muscles of the Forearm that Move the Hand and Fingers01:16

Muscles of the Forearm that Move the Hand and Fingers

3.1K
The muscles of the forearm that move the wrist, hand, and digits are numerous and diverse. They can be classified into two groups based on their location and function — the anterior and posterior compartment muscles.
Anterior Compartment
The anterior compartment muscles originate from the humerus. They primarily function as flexors and are also known as flexor muscles. They typically insert on the carpals, metacarpals, and phalanges. The superficial layer includes the flexor carpi...

PPE Use in Healthcare Settings I: Donning

1.9K
Donning PPE must be completed before contact with the patient. This process protects from infectious agents. The sequence and action included in each donning are critical, and the steps must be systematic to avoid exposure to pathogens. The institutional policy also needs to be followed while donning PPE. The pre-donning preparations are gathering equipment, inspecting the PPE equipment for tears, holes, or damage, removing jewelry, removing any garments below the elbows, and tying the hair...

Area of Science:

  • Occupational safety and health
  • Ergonomics
  • Anthropometry

Background:

  • Existing structural firefighting gloves present fit and bulkiness issues for a significant percentage of male (24-30%) and female (31-62%) firefighters.
  • These issues can compromise comfort, dexterity, and overall hand protection during critical tasks.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the current fit and use of structural firefighting gloves.
  • To develop an improved, science-based sizing scheme that better accommodates the diverse hand dimensions of the U.S. firefighter population.

Main Methods:

  • A study involving 863 male and 88 female firefighters across the U.S.
  • Measurement of fourteen key hand dimensions relevant to glove design.
  • Cluster analysis of hand dimensions to inform a new sizing scheme.

Main Results:

  • The current national standard for structural firefighting glove sizing inadequately represents the range and variation in firefighter hand sizes and shapes.
  • Significant mismatches exist between current glove sizing specifications and actual firefighter hand characteristics.
  • An improved glove-sizing plan was developed, utilizing clusters based on overall hand size and the contrast between hand/finger breadth and length.

Conclusions:

  • This research provides the most current anthropometric data for firefighters' hands, offering a novel approach to glove accommodation.
  • The proposed seven-size system demonstrates narrower variations (standard deviations) across dimensions compared to current practices.
  • The new sizing plan, incorporating specific considerations for female hand models and wider palm sizes for men, advances firefighter hand protection.
