Area of Science:

  • Gastroenterology
  • Epidemiology
  • Clinical Medicine

Background:

  • Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease.
  • Understanding UC epidemiology is crucial for public health and clinical management.
  • Previous studies highlight varied demographic and clinical patterns globally.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To describe the epidemiologic and clinical characteristics of ulcerative colitis patients.
  • To identify demographic trends and disease presentation in a Greek population.
  • To report on treatment outcomes, including surgical intervention.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of 217 ulcerative colitis cases.
  • Data collected between 1977 and 1983 at Evangelismos Hospital, Athens, Greece.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Inclusion criteria based on confirmed ulcerative colitis diagnosis.
  • Main Results:

    • Peak incidence observed in individuals aged 21–30 years, with a secondary peak in males during their 6th decade.
    • Urban and highly educated populations showed higher prevalence.
    • Severe attacks at onset occurred in 3.4% of patients; colectomy was performed in approximately 14% of cases.

    Conclusions:

    • Ulcerative colitis in this cohort presented with specific demographic predispositions.
    • Early disease management and monitoring are essential, especially for severe presentations.
    • Surgical intervention remains a significant treatment option for refractory or complicated ulcerative colitis.
