Resuming smoking improved ulcerative colitis symptoms in 14 of 30 patients. Those who improved smoked more cigarettes than those who did not experience symptom relief.

Area of Science:

  • Gastroenterology
  • Clinical Medicine
  • Internal Medicine

Background:

  • Ulcerative colitis is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease.
  • Smoking is generally discouraged in patients with ulcerative colitis due to known health risks.

Observation:

  • A study observed patients with ulcerative colitis who resumed smoking.
  • The study tracked symptom changes and smoking habits.

Findings:

  • 14 out of 30 ulcerative colitis patients showed symptom improvement after resuming smoking.
  • Patients experiencing improvement smoked a median of 20 cigarettes, compared to 10 in those who did not improve.

Implications:

  • This suggests a potential, albeit controversial, link between smoking and symptom amelioration in some ulcerative colitis cases.
