Background:

  • Lithium is a common mood stabilizer for bipolar disorder.
  • Concerns exist regarding lithium's potential to cause weight gain and increase body mass index (BMI).

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the long-term effects of lithium therapy on body mass index (BMI) in patients with bipolar disorder.
  • To identify predictors of BMI changes during lithium treatment.

Main Methods:

  • A cohort of 117 patients with bipolar disorder on long-term lithium therapy was studied.
  • Body mass index (BMI) was calculated using pre-lithium and current weight and height.
  • Data on age, sex, cumulative lithium dose, therapy duration, thyroid profile, and serum lithium levels were collected.

Main Results:

  • A non-significant increase in BMI was observed across the entire patient population.
  • Lithium therapy and sex were not significant predictors of BMI increase.
  • Approximately 27% of patients experienced a slight decrease in BMI during lithium treatment.

Conclusions:

  • Lithium therapy does not appear to exert significant pharmacological effects to increase BMI in the studied population.
  • The study suggests that lithium's impact on weight gain may be minimal for many patients with bipolar disorder.
